While I fully support and pray for our citizens serving as law enforcement officials throughout our country, and I do understand the atrocities that are being committed by people in indiscriminately shooting at them in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and daily in various parts of our country; I do have a problem with the "Back the Blue" act (S.3184).
The “Back the Blue Act,” the bill will make it a federal crime to kill, attempt or conspire to kill anyone in law enforcement, including federal judges, subject to the death penalty, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years for murder and a minimum sentence of 10 years for attempted murder.
Why is a Police officers life more valuable than mine? Why are the actions of the Police less accountable than mine? Why is any life more important than another? Why should someone get a mandatory minimum of 30 years for the murder of a policeman but only 10 years if they murder me? If a police officer breaks into my house with out knocking or announcement waving a gun like an armed intruder, so that I shoot him in self defense, why should I face a death penalty?
The problem people have with police comes from police and government officials being exempted from laws the rest of us are expected to obey. The problem comes from laws written to protect a minority of people not all of us, such as "hate crime laws". The problem comes from the police being militarized and appear more as an invader than a citizen of the community. (See the Presidents Task Force on 21st Century Policing.) http://www.cops.usdoj.gov/policingtaskforce
Demilitarize the police, subject all people to the same laws and justice, quite causing "protected classes" of citizens, and enforce the existing laws equitably.
No police force including federal law enforcement should be above the law,and they should not be allowed to carry any weapon that an honest citizen is not permitted to use or carry. No police force including federal should be allowed to use protective devices (bullet proof vests, body armor) that is not permitted to an honest citizen.
Stop the unjust and illegal actions of judges approving "FISA" and "No knock" warrants, impeach any Judge who believes the Constitution does not apply to today. Stop the illegal confiscatory actions of police through so called "anti-drug" and "Rico" laws, return to the constitutional authority of the government.
"I see absolutely no value to a judge of spending decades, years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, or seconds studying the Constitution, the history of its enactment, its amendments, and its implementation (across the centuries — well, just a little more than two centuries, and of course less for many of the amendments)," writes 7th Circuit Judge Richard Posner.
This is why people do not trust the government, the courts, or law enforcement anymore, the government does not follow the rule of law.
If the local government can not enforce the laws peaceably then there is a problem in government. If there is public unrest or civic violence then the Congress can authorize the Governor to utilize the National Guard to restore order, That is Constitutional, Article 1 sec 8: To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;
Until law enforcement is seen by the general public as being enforced equitably, and written in a way that the common man can understand them, until the police quit acting and being treated as an invading force, the public will not respect or trust them.
