The silent, months-long contempt expressed by the Russian political class toward the departing White House Administration was suddenly interrupted on Thursday by U.S. President Barack Obama’s announcement of a new set of anti-Russian sanctions. In Russian media, in the political class and among government officials, the reaction in Moscow was fierce, vocal and pugnacious. Obama’s decision to expel Russian diplomats—in addition to sanctioning a number of Russian companies and individuals—is nothing but evidence of the agony of the outgoing administration, Konstantin Kosachev, head of the International Committee of the Russian Upper House of Parliament, said to RIA Novosti. “The leaving administration has

However, cybersecurity specialists say the code came from an outdated Ukrainian hacking tool. On Thursday, the FBI and DHS released a joint report on a hacking operation they called ‘Grizzly Steppe’. They claimed the operation was linked to the Russian government, alleging that it had targeted “US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations.” Along with the report, the US security agencies released a sample of the malware code allegedly used in the Grizzly Steppe

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision not to expel U.S. diplomats in response to U.S. sanctions strengthens his chances of improving relations with the incoming Trump administration. President Barack Obama officially sanctioned the Russian government Thursday for purportedly trying to influence the 2016 presidential election. These sanctions included expelling 35 Russian diplomats and seizing Russian government property. Putin’s Foreign Minister indicated the Russian government would respond in kind, until he made a surprise announcement Friday that Russia would not take any punitive action.
