Statism is the belief that the civil government (or man via civil government) is the ultimate authority in the earth and as such is the source of law, morality, and righteousness (that which is right and wrong). Statism has manifested itself in different ways throughout history, and can be expressed through democratic and non-democratic governments alike.
A statist government treats its political sovereignty as a platform for moral sovereignty. In other words, as ultimate sovereign, the state is therefore not subject to God, the Bible, natural law, or any other religion or ethical system. A statist government need not be accountable to its own citizens.
The German philosopher/theologian Georg Hegel described the state as "God walking on earth". In other words, as the state is the ultimate power in life, it assumes the status of God and can do as it pleases. This line of thinking influenced the political thought of communists like Karl Marx and the National Socialist’s like Herman Goring and Adolf Hitler in Germany. This was a founding principle in Nazi theology leading Hegel’s contemporary Hermann Graf Keyserling, to coin the term "Führerprinzip" (Leader Principle). One of Keyserling's central claims was that certain 'gifted individuals' were "born to rule" on the basis of Social Darwinism. (Progressives’ theology today)
The ideology of the Führerprinzip sees each organization as a hierarchy of leaders, where every leader (Führer, in German) has absolute responsibility in his own area, demands absolute obedience from those below him and answers only to his superiors. This required obedience and loyalty even over concerns of right and wrong.
From the perspective of society at large, this attitude was summed up by William Marina as:
The significant question is: Why do a large number of people come to believe that only through increased state intervention can justice be achieved? To a great extent this belief is due to the overwhelming acceptance of the state as the source of value and law. Society not only looks for solutions within the paradigm defined by the state, but also finds it difficult to consider the view that statism is the heart of the problem.
The Führerprinzip was not invented by the National Socialists. But it goes back into antiquity; the Roman Caesars saw themselves as gods incarnate, as did many of the Old Testament pagan kings. They were the absolute authority in all matters; right and wrong; life and death. This was also a main principle in “The Prince” by Machiavelli; absolute authority of the Prince.
If a government sees its political sovereignty as a platform for moral sovereignty; then it has the right to do all things and the citizens exist for the welfare of the government. Now we can see the true danger of a government supporting “Social Justice”. Who decides what is “Fair”? What is your basis for judging right and wrong beyond what benefits the state the most?
Statism, the “Leader principle”. Socialism, and social justice; belong in dictatorships and communist countries, not Republics. The basis for morality must be greater than the state, that is why our founders in the Declaration of Independence said “the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them,” acknowledging that there is a power greater than the state.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,
Job 31:15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
Job 34:19 [How much less to him] that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all [are] the work of his hands.
Pro 22:2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD [is] the maker of them all.
Mal 2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?
This is the Standard for a Republic “All People are Equal”; God created them, God has given us rights, not the State.
