Kamala Harris And The Wage Gap Myth

Senator Kamala Harris (D, CA) has another campaign proposal.
And not surprisingly, it’s not a good idea.
What is her idea?
Answer: Mandate that employers pay equal wages to women.
It may sound nice in theory. It doesn’t seem fair that men make more than women.
However, it is a more nuanced issue than it may seem.
Of course, Senator Harris, being a good liberal, thinks the government needs to step in and remedy the problem.
Senator Kamala Harris’s Plan for “Fixing” the Gender Wage Gap
If she were elected president, Kamala Harris would fine businesses who don’t pay female workers the same as their male counterparts.
Her campaign is touting the plan as “the most aggressive equal pay proposal in history.” As of now, the burden of suing employers for pay discrimination is on the female workers; Harris’s proposal would change that. Instead of the burden being placed on women, employers would have to prove that their pay policies were fair.
The far-left Huffington Post reported, “Under Harris’s plan, companies would be required to obtain an ‘equal pay certification’ from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to prove they pay women equally. They would be required to disclose whether they received that certification on their website’s homepage and to prospective employees.”
How exactly would the employers prove this?
Answer: “To meet certification requirements, companies would have to demonstrate they have eliminated pay disparities between women and men who are doing work of equal value, per Harris’ campaign. To the extent pay disparities do exist for similar jobs, companies will be required to show the gap is based on merit, performance, or seniority—not gender.”
The plan is based on a faulty premise perpetuated by the Left: There is gender discrimination in wages.

The Wage Gap Is Not Caused by Gender Discrimination
It is true that women make 80% of what their male counterparts do. However, that doesn’t tell the whole story.
Upon further review, the wage gap can be explained by multiple variables.
That total is misleading. The 80% accounts for all full-time workers, across all kinds of jobs, regardless of the skills and preferences of the workers.
It is a misleading statistic because it is not an apples-to-apples comparison of men and women doing the same work.
Liberals like Harris like to make the wage-gap claim without providing context. Context matters. They fail to account for the lifestyle and educational differences between the sexes.
It is a fact that women are more likely to work part-time than men, and are less likely to work overtime when they work full-time. In general, women prefer to spend more time with their families, and they prefer to work in less risky jobs.
Women also don’t tend to go into any of the STEM fields. Jobs in those industries pay more than the average job in industries that women typically work in. If there were more female engineers or scientists, then the wage gap would be narrowed. Women are far more likely to major in degree paths that offer less pay than those that men major in.
This is just another policy meant to appeal to the victimhood mentality of the Democratic Party. Harris is seeking to create a victim class (women) to play on their emotions and garner their votes.
The wage gap is a myth perpetrated by the Democratic Party that has no empirical data to back up the claim.
