Hello everyone, Suzie wanted me to pass along that all went well today with the procedure to shock Will's heart. She thanks all for their prayers.

Suzie also wanted me to pass along that she will pick a winner of the caption contest Wednesday night. I take it that the contest is not over so posting one tomorrow seems fair.

The Rarity of the God-Fearing Man

by Russell Kirk

Forgetting that there exists such a state as salutary dread, modern man has become spiritually foolhardy. The God-fearing man is rare…

Today’s offering in our Timeless Essay series affords our readers the opportunity to join Russell Kirk as he explores the moral strength and influence that result from fearing God. —W. Winston Elliott III, Publisher

A Michigan farmer, some years ago, climbed to the roof of his silo, and there he painted, in great red letters that the Deity could see, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” These words are on that roof yet. When in his cups, which was often enough, that farmer thrashed his daughter to fill her with a holy terror.

"Say nothing of my religion. It is known to my God and myself alone. Its evidence before the world is to be sought in my life; the if that has been honest and dutiful to society, the religion which has regulated it cannot be a bad one."

Thomas Jefferson

Short Video

Jefferson completed an 84-page manuscript he called the “Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth.” Gleaned from the four Gospels of the New Testament, and Jefferson’s private work, it remained unknown until the manuscript was sold by his family to the Smithsonian Institution in 1895

Holy freedom: The rare gift of religious liberty
Allie Stuckey · May 31, 2018

The day before Memorial Day, my family and I enjoyed our Sunday morning at church — singing, like we always do, about Jesus and hearing, for the ten thousandth time, the good news that He died for our sins. During the service, I was again reminded how rare of a gift this is — to be able to worship whomever, however, and wherever we please, without the slightest bit of fear of persecution.

Why should I be born here, where I have such radical liberty, when others risk their lives every day to follow the God they serve? I’ll never know. Acts 17:26 tells us that God determines all of our dwelling places and the time periods in which we live. He’s graciously allowed me to live here, now, having all the freedom in the world to live and worship as I see fit.

Although being born in America is a gracious gift from God over which I had no control, that America is a blessed place in which to be born is not mere coincidence. Enjoying as inherent rights what others desire as luxuries is a result of centuries of sacrifice, toil, and steadfast effort in the narrow cause of liberty. Men and women have died for our right to go to church, to attend our mosques, to learn in our synagogues unafraid of punishment. Others around the world aren’t so lucky.

This week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released the 2017 annual report for the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (UCIRF). The report chronicles violations of religious freedom committed by governments, terrorist groups, and individuals across 200 countries. The colored areas below designate the countries and territories in which religious liberty is routinely threatened:

The word “mother” or “mothers” appears in the Bible hundreds of times—even the word “mother-in-law.” Literally from A to Z—from Abigail to Zipporah—there are more than eighty-four mothers mentioned by name in the Old Testament alone.

Library of Congress

The American Colony in Jerusalem
Exhibition Home

anuary 12–April 2, 2005

This exhibition offers a glimpse into the remarkable history and work of the American Colony, a Christian utopian society that formed in Jerusalem in 1881. The photographs, documents, and artifacts exhibited are drawn from a generous gift to the Library of Congress from Valentine Vester and descendants of the founders and leaders of the American Colony community. This archival treasure, which has been preserved for decades, provides a unique record of the history of Jerusalem and the Middle East from the last years of the Ottoman Empire into the present century.

The Library of Congress is grateful to Mrs. Vester and the Board of Directors of the American Colony for donating this collection. In addition, the Library wishes to acknowledge Ruth Victor Hummel for curating this exhibition, George Hintlian for his support and work done with this collection, and photographer Garo Nalbandian for his help in securing some of the images on display.
