Many Students are talking about walking out of school to protest the problem of school shootings.

Let me propose a different idea that could be much more constructive.

Get together with your class mates and write a law.You want Congress to pass a law? Write it for them.
Send it to you Congressmen, Senators, President Trump and your State Governor.

I would also propose that Anti-Gun groups like Mayors against guns, and the Brady campaign support this effort by offering a 4 year scholarship for the best ideas. Put your money where your mouth is, and encourage education at the same time.

I believe this would be an excellent Civics class project that would also encourage the study of our form of government and how laws are made.
Here is an outline to help get Started.

Name of Law: Something like “Common Sense Gun law of 2018'
Constitutional authority: Article and Section of the Constitution that authorizes this act:See the Tenth Amendment for Guidelines.
Reasons for law: Research or thoughts for why this is necessary. Use reliable sources such as Library of Congress, terms defined by Websters dictionary or recognized authority. Data from the FBI or Homeland security, or Other valid sources. Do not use Blog polls, articles or opinion pieces.
Action needed to be taken: for example;
1. Enforce all Gun laws as written,
2. Review all existing gun laws for conflicts, redundancy, and errors.
3. Ensure all government agencies comply with current laws.

After all this work is done make sure that your proposed law does not conflict with the U.S. Constitution without proposing a Constitutional Amendment to alter the Constitution.
I look forward to seeing your proposals.

God Bless.

It happens sometimes, I have known Christine for a while so I might have had a little better context to put it in from her past comments.

hmm..  good point.  maybe I read too fast to absorb the context well, or maybe Poe's Law applies;

Poe's law

Poe's law is an Internet adage which states that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, parodies of extreme views will, to some readers, be indistinguishable from sincere expressions of the parodied views.

"The Federal Government cannot protect us. Do we really want this Government making decision for our local communities? Homeland Security is already taking over our local police. Is this really what we want? We are giving our Government more and more power over our daily lives. Federal money means Federal power. It will all depend on how much freedom each of us a willing to give up to protect our children."

I see what you are saying. However the full context of her comment, as I quoted, I see it as an argument against big government. She starts with "The Federal government cannot protect us" then she states that we are giving the government too much power at the cost of our freedom, and the liberals argue that it is to protect the children.

I agree with Ben;Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Ignorance may be bliss, but it certainly is not freedom, except in the minds of those who prefer darkness to light and chains to liberty. The more true information we can acquire, the better for our enfranchisement.

Hi, Christine.

Do we hear of such atrocities in the schools in Israel?  No. How about at their airports? Nope. For years I have been of the opininion that the US should hire experienced Israelis as security cnsultants.

Also, the ones that would strongly oppose metal detectors in schools would be the parents. Why? Because, as you had pointed out, it would be time consuming. It would require the students to be scheduled enter the building at least,an hour sooner than the first period bellrings. And that's a big inconvenience, right?

W/ out a doubt the American population is a totally complacent, instant-gratification culture. Has been so for over a half a century.,

Hugh

you ask which part of her post do I object to, the part I copy/posted =

It will all depend on how much freedom each of us a willing to give up to protect our children.

and I pointed out that it's a mantra/mindset that's been stealing our liberties and freedoms for decades. ...and that it's not factual, we don't have to give up our liberties/freedoms to protect our children and shouldn't.  ..and far far too many have come to believe that giving up our liberties is only option for safety/protection.

I fully agree with you we need God back into our culture in a big way.. and that excluding God has been disastrous. AND that definitely won't rob of us our liberties and freedoms. as evidence see my blog post on that topic -- https://theconstitutionalconservatives.com/profiles/blogs/the-only-...  We need that above all. Our culture MUST honor God as our ultimate authority and provider, and NOT government.

in the mean time we should quit making matters worse by doing stupid things like passing out psychotropic drugs like it's candy, and refusing to recognize that it's very dangerous stuff and absolutely IS causing school boys to become mass murderers and shoot up schools.

Larry,

what part of Christine's comment do you object to? She mearly reported What she heard not that she agreed with it. I think her whole post reasonable and thoughtful.

I read an article about the 1920-1929 how young men and women stowed away on ships to get their name in the press, one weent to Antartica with William Byrd, a young lady got an acting contract from it, by 1929 there were over 500 stow aways a year.

Could School Shootings be a way of getting attention?

As you say "why not try ending the popular policy of prescribing dangerous mind altering drugs ... have a significant risk of dangerous/violent/suicidal side effects to schoolkids??? There's millions of schoolkids prescribed them for whatever whim of the Dr.'s day. That goes to the core of the problem instead of ineffectively treating a symptom --- and doesn't take away anybody's liberties/freedoms"

But that is not the sole cause, TV violence, glorifying guns in entertainment, the lack of respect of human life, there are many causes for this problem.

I see the solution in a change of civic values, we have pushed God out of the public square and replaced Him with guns, drugs, alcohol, and self gratification. Nothing that can help a persons self esteem, or to give them pride of self value, just a blanket for a shallow and dreary life.

We must teach the youth morals, ethics, and the ability to think. None of which is taught in public schools anymore.

God Bless.

Christine

c'mon now... that's been the mantra of liberty/freedom thieves for decades now. We can care about the children and liberty/freedom too, and protect both of them.

the rest of your post is more reasonable, but consider this - it might not be taking into consideration that the psychotropic drugs we're feeding schoolboys is creating the young mass murderers which shoot up those schools. EVERY ONE since and including Columbine has been just that.

why not try ending the popular policy of prescribing dangerous mind altering drugs that are even advertised on each of their commercials to have a significant risk of dangerous/violent/suicidal side effects to schoolkids???  There's millions of schoolkids prescribed them for whatever whim of the Dr.'s day.  That goes to the core of the problem instead of ineffectively treating a symptom --- and doesn't take away anybody's liberties/freedoms

I was listening to a radio show discuss putting metal detectors in all schools. The host said it may have some effect on the smaller schools but not on those with 4,000 or more students, that, it would be too time consuming. Time consuming or not would it not be better than someone thinking of beating the last record of killing kids to become the first loon to kill more than a 100 students. I have no doubt one is waiting in the wings as I speak.

A couple of decades ago there was talk of staggering school hours. Yet, we have still to see this implemented. Along with staggering school hours they now also have Internet classes. Free gun zones are an open invitation for mass killings. Society has known this but are still unwilling to accept that the body count will continue.

Government buildings protect themselves but our local communities are not willing, along with the school administration, to protect our children while they are in their care.  Most of us do everything to protect our homes yet, we continue to send the children off each day without a thought of who are protecting them. Most of us even lock our car doors to save our property. Does this tell us we care more for the safety of our material possessions than we do for the children?

Instead of our communities working together to find ways to protect the students they seem to want to take away the rights of all to protect themselves. Media loves violence and doesn't hesitate to broadcast it. If there is no violence to show then they will even, at times, create it. They show the same thing over and over and over again. After all, they must think of their ratings. Instead of trying to ban guns the media should be trying to promote solution in protecting our schools. Where is the media's fight for protection of our schools? Oh dear, not good for their ratings.

America is the only country left where each citizen has the right to own a gun. If the Government keeps taking away our right then there is no telling how much power the Government will have and how they will use that power. Our Supreme Court is becoming closer to a Social Justice Court. Much like Hitler's Court system. If Democrats ever get controlling power again in the House, Senate and Executive Office it will make Obama's time in Office look like kindergarten.

The Federal Government cannot protect us. Do we really want this Government making decision for our local communities? Homeland Security is already taking over our local police. Is this really what we want? We are giving our Government more and more power over our daily lives. Federal money means Federal power. It will all depend on how much freedom each of us a willing to give up to protect our children.

"Common Sense" and today's snowflakes and millennials don't fit in the same sentence. It's oil and water.

Students by their very mindset have always been rebellious against ANY set of rules that impedes on their physical desires and their utopian (socialist /progressive) ideals.

Today's students are the product of DECADES of progressive indoctrination disguised as the "education system" which was esablished by the post WW2 antiAmerican / proCommunist students of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.  These own or run the media, the universities and the entertainment.industry - the key "keepers" of the new American culture / society.

"Common Sense" is becoming as rare as judeo-christian morals and values.
